Sandys Boat Club capture first trophy of snooker season

Sandys Boat Club had plenty of cause for celebration after capturing the snooker season’s first trophy of the season with a 3-1 win over Watford Sports Club in the Island Construction Services Cup final.

Very little separated the teams in an exciting west end derby, which featured the visitors overcoming a spirited fightback from their hosts.

“Watford have a very good team and we always have a really good game when we play them,” victorious Sandys captain Martin Siese told The Royal Gazette.

“Any time we play those guys it’s just neck and neck and very close. It could go either way and I just think it was our night because we have lost to them this year already in the league.”

Sandys grabbed the lead early in the first-to-three-points series after team newcomer and Bermuda Open champion Henryk Marszalek prevailed 70-30 against Aaron Bean in the opening frame.

The second frame proved to be evenly contested with Watford’s Keino Zuill beating Richard Beal 57-42 to level the series.

Sandys regained the lead after Peter Bromby recorded a comfortable 59-17 win over Mark Iris in the third frame to move his team to the brink of clinching the title. The Olympic sailor’s conservative approach paid off as he capitalised on low-risk shots and defended brilliantly to deny his opponent any good looks on the table.

With the title within grasp, Siese was pushed hard by rival Kyle Williams in the next frame before sealing victory. The Sandys captain and experienced sailor jumped out to a 20-point lead but was forced to play catch-up after Williams reeled him in and surged ahead.

However, the see-saw battle took another twist after Siese capitalised on a slice of luck to regain the lead and go on to clinch the title.

“I was playing a low-percentage shot but it went in, so you could say it was a little bit of luck,” he said.

“I was playing for it but it was a high-risk shot and luckily it went in and then I went yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and that was enough to win the game.

“It was a good finish to what was a very tight, close game and I had a good run to seal the deal.

“Its always nice to win a trophy and we are very pleased to have won the first one up for grabs this year. We’re still in all the rest, so we’re hoping to add to it as well later in the year.”
