Proud father excited to see children at helm of national team
North Village Rams legend Calvin Dill Sr will be an emotional man on Tuesday night when his son and daughter appear alongside each other on the sidelines at the National Sports Centre.
Naquita Robinson, the senior women’s football coach, has asked her brother Calvin “Patches” Dill to help her as an assistant as she tries to mastermind a win over Costa Rica.
For Dill Sr it promises to be a night when raw emotion will come to the fore.
“I am so excited,” he said, his voice crackling with emotion. “I can’t tell you how proud I am to have my daughter and my son both coaching the national team and I’m just over the moon.”
The father recalled times past when he would take his son, the older sibling, to matches and later on watch as his daughter gravitated to the sport due to her desire to imitate her brother.
“When they were younger — he’s the oldest — I would take him everywhere Village played, whereby he was like the team’s mascot,” Dill Sr said.
“She came three years later and just idolised her brother and wanted to do everything he did. He was her teacher at an early age and she gravitated to football and really loved the game and her brother.
“It will be a special time for all of us to see the two together on the international stage, both representing their country at the highest level.”
Naquita Robinson revealed that she had bolstered her coaching staff with the addition of her brother, who will join existing assistant coach Karl Roberts, while Tracy Murphy will instruct the goalkeepers.
But tonight they may be on the opposing sides as North Village take on the Lady Gombey Warriors in a training match on Friday night. However, Robinson did not attempt to disguise her glee at having Dill on board, noting that her sibling had been a major support throughout her football career.
“Karl Roberts has been my assistant all this time, and he remains as one of my assistants,” said Robinson, who revealed the news on the Island Stats Football Show last week.
“But I have brought in another assistant who will probably be one of the more memorable and exciting times for me, and I mean no disrespect to anybody else that I’ve coached with.
“But my first coach. My best friend. My for ever coach and my best friend, Calvin Dill, will be joining my staff. It’s going to be quite an honour to walk out on the pitch with my brother in front of a home crowd.
“So, that’s my staff. I also have Tracy Murphy, who’ll be coming in from Canada as the goalkeeper coach. She travelled to the Cayman Islands and to Guatemala, so she will also be part of my coaching staff.”
Still, Robinson intimated that she would rather victory over the group favourites be the day’s talking point and is hopeful that the coaching additions will spread the burden of preparation, allowing for more effective team management.
“I spend a lot of late nights putting a lot of plays together,” Robinson said.
“While they’re sleeping, I’m definitely up with the MacBook putting stuff together. So I kind of end up doing the work of five coaches by myself, but it’s worth it and it will be worth it in the end.”
