Adriana Penruddocke has best day of career in Princess Sofia Trophy
Sailor Adriana Penruddocke had the best day of her career on the water with a string of fine performances at the Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta.
Penruddocke bounced back from a disappointing opening day in the Ilca 6 to produce finishes of fourth, fifth and second in a field of more than 140 boats.
Discarding her worst result of 63rd, which came in the only race on the opening day of the regatta on Monday, Penruddocke’s excellence propelled her nearly 140 places up the leaderboard to second overall on 11 points.
That is just three points off regatta leader Eve McMahon, from Ireland, with overnight leader Matilda Nicholls, from Great Britain, falling to third on 14 points.
Penruddocke’s coach Shaun Priestley was impressed with her display but stressed there is a long way to go, with the fleet racing finishing on Friday and the medal races taking place on Saturday
“This was Adriana’s best ever qualifying series on the Olympic circuit and this event is a very high calibre with more than 140 boats,” Penruddocke said.
“She sailed the most consistently today in very unstable conditions but we are aware that this is a long week with loads more action to come and we are taking it one race at a time.”
Penruddocke is one of three Bermuda sailors in action in Spain, with Sebastian Kempe and Campbell Patton representing the island in the Ilca 7.
Kempe occupies 32nd position overall after finishes of eighteenth, 56th and fifth in his three races on day two. After discarding the 56th ― his worst result of the regatta ― the winner of the 2025 Male Athlete of the Year has 52 points.
Patton failed to make the start line on day two.
