Nahki Wells: We’ve not come this far to fall at the last hurdle
Nahki Wells and Luton Town are facing a must-win situation heading into their Sky Bet League One season finale away to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
The Hatters are one point outside the play-off positions and have no margin for error as they must win their final match away to third-placed Bolton while needing Stevenage Borough, Stockport County or Wells’s former club, Bradford City, to lose if they are to secure a spot in the promotion play-offs.
The Bermuda striker is well aware of the importance of the match and says he and his team-mates are determined as ever to come away with the desired outcome and extend their season.
“We go away to Bolton knowing that we must win, and that’s where our focus lies,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.
“We will see where that gets us, but we believe and we understand that we’ve not come this far to fall at the last hurdle, so we will be as prepared as possible.
“We go away to Bolton knowing that it is somewhat out of our control. But equally we have to control our controllables and that is we have to go to Bolton and win, so that’s where our mindset will be this week.”
Luton kept their play-off hopes alive with a hard-fought 2-1 win at home to Barnsley last time out, with Wells getting on the scoresheet after converting his tenth goal of the season from the penalty spot.
“Happy to get on the scoresheet and dispatch my penalty. I hadn’t taken one since October, so I was kind of glad to get over that duck,” he said.
The striker opened the scoring at Kenilworth Road from 12 yards in the sixteenth minute after team-mate Hakeem Odoffin was brought down in the area, but the away side levelled through Adam Phillips ten minutes later to leave the teams deadlocked at half-time.
But with their chances of securing a top-six finish and a spot in the play-offs fast running out, Hatters midfielder Kasey Palmer grabbed a 79th-minute winner to ensure that Luton’s late bid for the play-offs will go to the last day of the season.
“We are happy to continue winning ways in what’s been a crucial run for us,” Wells said.
“It was probably not one of our best games, but the most important thing is that we won the game.
“We didn’t make it easy for ourselves, which has been a constant theme of late.
“But we’ve found a way which shows the true character of a side that can go to the very end and has that belief and that quality that at some point the hard work and the efforts will pay dividends.
“We nicked it in the end which sets us up nicely for a final-day push for the play-offs.
“It feels like months of training preparation to fine details has set us up nicely for Saturday.”
Wells is hoping to join compatriot Nathan Trott, whose Cardiff City have already clinched promotion to make an immediate return to the Championship next season after dropping into League One for the first time in more than 20 years.
Trott joined Cardiff on a season-long loan from Danish Superliga champions FC Copenhagen last August, and it is understood that his deal includes an option to buy should promotion be secured.
However, the 27-year-old’s future at the Welsh club appears uncertain after a leading Danish football magazine Tipsbladet reported that he has turned down offers of a permanent deal.
