Port Royal school reopens after students turned away for a day
Port Royal Primary School reopened its doors today after turning students away for the duration of yesterday.
The Ministry of Education confirmed yesterday that the school was closed because of “insufficient staff” numbers.
The ministry did not confirm the reason for the school’s closure.
Port Royal has been embroiled in a dispute with Crystal Caesar, the Minister of Education, over her intervention into a student disciplinary matter last month.
A petition was launched calling for the reinstatement of a teacher who was placed on administrative leave in relation to the matter. The petition authors, identified only as “concerned parents”, threatened “further action” if the teacher was not reinstated by last Friday. It has garnered 636 signatures since being launched on May 9.
The Royal Gazette has asked the Ministry of Education for an update on the situation.
The Bermuda Union of Teachers has not responded to questions.
