Fitness is also about listening to your body

As fitness enthusiasts, we often think strength means pushing harder, going longer and never missing a workout or race. But this weekend at the Whiskey Run in Huntsville, Alabama, reminded me that real strength also means knowing when your body needs rest.

I completed one race feeling strong and excited for the next challenge. Less than 24 hours later, food poisoning completely changed the plan. Instead of preparing mentally and physically for another race, I was trying to recover, hydrate and simply feel normal again.

Of course, not being able to run the second race was disappointing, especially after looking forward to it. But one missed race doesn’t define the journey, and there will be plenty more opportunities waiting when I return home to Bermuda.

This experience reminded me that fitness is about much more than medals or finish times. It’s about adaptability, patience and learning to listen to your body.

We celebrate discipline and toughness, but recovery deserves just as much respect. Sometimes the best thing you can do is slow down, recover properly and come back stronger.

Not every race weekend goes according to plan, and that’s OK. Sometimes the unexpected moments teach you more than the races themselves.

And honestly, surviving my race this weekend and food poisoning in the same trip deserves a medal of its own!
