Local retailers will receive customs relief on items used for renovating their stores for another five years.

The Retail Shops (Temporary Customs Duty Relief for Capital Investments) Amendment Act 2026 passed without objection in the House of Assembly.

David Burt, the Premier, told MPs that retailers have received $6.9 million in relief for $30 million worth of goods used to refurbish their businesses since the legislation was introduced in 2008.

Mr Burt, who is also Minister of Finance explained: “By providing a 0 per cent rate on capital goods, the Government lowers the barrier for retailers to upgrade their physical stores and technological infrastructure and also furnishes a predictable fiscal environment, allowing businesses to plan and execute large-scale renovation expansion projects that may take several years to complete.”

When questioned by Douglas DeCouto, the Shadow Minister of Finance, Mr Burt said 22 business have claimed this relief within the first quarter of 2026 alone.

MPs voted to extend the customs break until March 31, 2031.
