The perfect summer food day
If there's one thing I've learnt after years of writing about food, it's that the best summer days are often planned around what you're going to eat next.
Not in an obsessive way. More in a "while we're here, where should we grab lunch?" kind of way. Summer in Bermuda naturally lends itself to long meals, spontaneous drinks and the kind of days that stretch from morning coffee to late-night cocktails without much effort.
If I had one perfect summer food day, this is exactly how I'd spend it.
The morning starts after I drop my son off to summer camp. I drive over to Two Fish In A Barrel for a great cup of coffee and breakfast. Between the breakfast sandwiches and the omelettes, it’s always delicious.
For me, this isn't a grab-and-go breakfast. This is a sit-down, linger-over-your-coffee kind of breakfast. The kind where one cup turns into two and nobody is looking at their watch. Summer is one of the few times of year when slowing down feels acceptable, and Two Fish is perfectly suited to that pace, along with pulling out my laptop to write.
By lunchtime, I'm making my way back home to St George's. There are plenty of places I enjoy eating during the summer but Wahoo's remains one of those restaurants I find myself returning to again and again. My order is easy: fish tacos with a side of peas and rice.
They're everything I want from a summer lunch — fresh, light and full of flavour without weighing you down for the rest of the day. If you've spent the morning exploring the East End, walking through St George's or simply enjoying the waterfront, they're exactly the right meal for the moment.
If it’s exceptionally hot, I’m nipping into Yo Cherry for a scoop of home-made ice cream. Usually, I go for mint chip on a waffle cone but the caramel brownie is a close second.
After lunch, the day shifts gears. Summer food days aren't just about meals. They're about the moments in between. For me, that means a few hours poolside at Rosedon.
There are few places on the island that do relaxed luxury quite as well. This is where I'm ordering a glass of rosé or a cocktail and settling in for the afternoon. There’s no agenda and no schedule. Just good drinks, good company and a reminder that not every moment needs to be productive.
As the sun begins to drop, it's time for dinner. For me, summer dining is best enjoyed outdoors, which is why I'm heading to Rustico.
The patio is one of my favourite places to spend a summer evening. There's something about dining al fresco in Bermuda that immediately slows the pace of the day and Rustico does it particularly well. The atmosphere is relaxed but polished, the food is consistently good and the setting encourages you to stay a little longer than planned.
For me, it's alfresco perfection. And yes, dessert is absolutely part of the plan. A great dinner deserves a proper ending.
But a perfect summer food day doesn't end when dinner does. One of my favourite things about summer is that there always seems to be time for one more drink. Which is why my final stop is Intrepid for cocktails.
The bar at Intrepid has quietly become one of my favourite places to finish an evening. The energy is sophisticated but approachable, the cocktails are excellent and there's always a sense that people are genuinely enjoying themselves. It feels lively without being overwhelming.
It's the kind of place where you order one drink and end up staying for two. And that's exactly how a perfect Bermuda summer food day should end.
