Bermuda captain Terryn Fray and coach Cal Waldron have pledged an exciting brand of cricket when the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Sub-regional Qualifier starts on island on Sunday.

“You’re going to see a new, energised team, a team that is going to play straight through,” Fray told The Royal Gazette.

“A team that’s a little bit more tactical and strategic in the way we want to play our cricket.

“We’ve always been there to hit boundaries, but I think this team is very well balanced in the sense that we have the boundary hitters, but we also have some very intelligent cricket players that know how to play the game in different phases of the match.

“If we get put into certain situations, I’m more than confident that we have the players to help us get out of those sticky situations.”

Waldron is optimistic about Bermuda’s chances against Brazil, Belize, Panama and Bahamas.

“We just want to approach it positively, go out there and execute what we need to execute,’’ the coach said.

“When we have the upper hand, let's be dominant about it, go out there and put our best foot forward and get the job done.

“We know what the goal is, but we still want to brand our cricket. Go out there and play some attractive and exciting cricket.”

Fray declared that the players were ready to hit the ground running at North Field, National Sports Centre, where most of them played in the Bermuda Smash Invitational.

“I think the guys are excited to put back on the Bermuda uniform, especially after a good and successful Bermuda Smash for mostly everybody that’s in the squad,” the captain said.

“I think only a couple of players didn’t play in the Smash, so it’s good to keep the cricket flowing. There’s a lot of expectation around that match, the guys are ready to get out there and in front of our home crowd.

“We have to win all our matches, and it starts with Brazil on Sunday. We’ve played all these teams before, so we know what they’re bringing to the table.

“All those teams, we can honestly say that they are improving, so we have to stay cognisant of the teams coming down.

“They’re going to put up a good fight. But I think if we stick to our game plans and the way how we want to play our cricket, we’ll be successful.”

Fray expressed his excitement about inclusion of young players in the national squad.

“When I came back in as captain, I always tried to suggest to the Bermuda Cricket Board that we needed to start to integrate some of these young guys in,” the captain said.

“When the older guys like myself start to step down, that is an easy transition for the national team. Contingency planning and succession planning further down the road.

“It’s good to see these young guys. They’re playing well and they’re all having a good season so far. Isaiah, I think, is the leading run-scorer in Bermuda in the T20 format in domestic cricket.

“You’ve got Zerai who’s overseas and he’s playing well. Luke’s also went on a tour to South Africa with his school and he’s playing well.

“We have Nzari Paynter who is new to the national team, but he’s not so much a youngster.

“He’s played quite a bit representing St George’s. I think these guys are ready, I think they’ve been ready, and there’s no better time to introduce them into the Bermuda team.”

The coach believes the presence of young players is a great way of planning for the future.

“It’s a good opportunity for us moving forward,” he said.

“Some of these guys are probably in the last tournament phases of their career, so we need to start to look at the future of Bermuda cricket.

“They're the ones that I’ve chosen so far. Hopefully, they come in and they back their skill set, they back their approach to the game and reward the selection.

“So positive for them that they got selected. I don’t have any doubt in their confidence or their skills.

“It’s just a matter of how they approach it, make it comfortable for them so they’re not anxious and nervous about going out there and just being natural cricketers and just playing the natural game.”

White Hill Field was used for the team’s final preparations, with sessions from Monday to Thursday.

“The preparation’s been good, individually and collectively as a team,” Waldron said.

“They’ve been doing the fitness sessions and they’ve had some technical stuff with one-on-one sessions with Andre Coley.

“It’s just a matter of getting them together and on game day, getting through the game plans and getting it done.

“Unfortunately, Andre Coley’s not with us for this tournament. But that still doesn’t change the way we’re going to approach the tournament, the games and how we’re going to conduct ourselves.”

Waldron is working with former national coach Herbie Bascome, who is enjoying success with Southampton Rangers in domestic cricket.

“It’s good to have Herbie here and it’s a blessing,” the coach added.

“He brings a good, positive energy and vibe. It’s a good addition to the squad. He’s been in the background and it’s not an introduction that’s unknown to him.

“He’s been around; now it’s just a little bit at the forefront, it’s him and I now.”
