Reasons to be thankful

Dear Sir,

Having just finished a lovely Sunday walk through Hamilton, it reminds me of how truly fortunate we all are. The weather is so good right now. It would be nice if it didn't get any hotter this summer!

Sunday mornings in Hamilton — or anywhere on the island — are, I think, special. On the way, looking over at Hamilton Harbour from Cavendish Road on a bright, sunny morning is wonderful. It is generally quiet and peaceful towards the northern part of the city, or — as we call it — "back of town".

Walking towards Front Street, again you see the yachts in the harbour. This morning, the tall ship Sagres from Portugal is docked. It's a beautiful sight — the Portuguese flag flying high. (Good luck to Portugal in the World Cup!).

There aren't too many places in the world, at least the parts I've visited, where people readily greet you with a “Good Morning" or a "What's Happenin’?". If by chance you run into a friend, or even just an acquaintance, you might get a hug.

Sure, we have our problems, like everywhere else in the world and we will always agree to disagree about many issues. Having come here in 1968 from the US, I never wanted to reside anywhere else. I'm thankful that Bermuda welcomed me to live and work and, yes, to love here, have a family and enjoy the beauty of this island.

I know this all sounds “corny“ to some. There are some who may find that the grass is greener elsewhere for many reasons — employment, education, cost of living, etc. If so, go for it. I believe, however, most of you will come to realise that yes, Bermuda is indeed another world.

Proud to be Bermudian!
