An increase in pensions and amendments to expand the powers of the head of the Immigration Appeal Tribunal are set to go before the House of Assembly today.

Parliamentarians are expected to debate the Pension (Increase) Amendment Act 2026, which will increase the rate of pensions by 10 per cent from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027.

The House will also discuss the Bermuda Immigration and Protection Amendment Bill 2026, which would allow the chairman of the Immigration Appeal Tribunal to dismiss an appeal where the appellant has failed to pursue it for a period of six months.

The amendments would also allow the tribunal to make rules as to the manner in which the chairman can dismiss an appeal and allows those aggrieved by a decision of the chairman to appeal dismissals to the Supreme Court.

The House is also expected to hear several statements with David Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance, tabling the Bermuda Monetary Authority Annual Report 2024 and Zane DeSilva, the Minister of Housing and Municipalities, offering an update on affordable housing.

Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, will speak about strengthening the enforcement powers of the Employment and Labour Relations Tribunal, Alexa Lightbourne, the Minister of Home Affairs, will detail proposed regulatory framework for Earth Station licensing.

The Privacy Commissioner’s Annual Report for 2025-26 is expected to be tabled, as well as legislation to amend child daycare allowances and the Contributory Pensions (Amendment of Contributions and Benefits) Order 2026.
