Police urge public to speak out against sexual assault

The Bermuda Police Service urged the public to do their part to prevent sexual assault, stating that everyone has a role to play.

A police spokesman said that everyone should respect the personal boundaries of others, practise and promote clear consent, and speak up against inappropriate or abusive behaviour.

The spokesman also urged the public to be aware of their surroundings when out and keep an eye on their drinks.

He said: “Keep your drink with you at all times, never leave it unattended and, if possible, use a drink cover. If a drink tastes or looks unusual, dispose of it immediately.

“If a situation or person makes you feel uncomfortable, leave the area and seek assistance from someone you trust, or a member of the venue staff. If you see something concerning, speak up when it is safe to do so.”

The spokesman added that consent requires a clear, voluntary and informed “yes”, and consent can be withdrawn at any time.

He said: “A person cannot give consent if they are asleep, unconscious or incapacitated by alcohol or drugs. Silence, lack of resistance or previous consent does not mean consent. ‘No’ means no.”

Acting Detective Inspector Courtney Simmons, of the Vulnerable Persons Unit, said that confidential support is available, urging those who have experienced or witnessed a sexual assault to come forward.

She said: “Please make an initial report by calling 911. Alternatively, you are encouraged to visit any police station and speak with an officer.

“You will be treated with dignity and respect. Any and all information you provide will be afforded the strictest of confidence.

“Together, we can help prevent sexual assault by promoting respect, consent and personal responsibility. Every action can make a difference.”
