A man who carried a knife and stole merchandise from a Paget grocery store has been sentenced to 18 months of probation in Magistrates’ Court.

Jordayo Johnston, 35, admitted having the weapon with a four-inch blade and stealing two chocolate bars and a granola bar from A1 Paget, as well as disobeying a written notice by trespassing at the store on Valley Road, when he appeared in court yesterday.

Johnston, from Warwick, committed all the offences, which he initially denied, on August 11, with the stolen merchandise valued at $31.97.

Magistrate Auralee Cassidy sentenced Johnston, who has been behind bars since August, to time served in custody for all three offences, as well as probation for having the knife.

Conditions of his probation include not committing another offence, notifying court staff of any changes in employment or address, and attending any programmes aimed at improving his “work or social skills”.
