grocery store on St. John's Road in Pembroke because the produce had outgrown the size of the building. "We had to progress because we had reached optimum capacity,'' he said. Mr. Adderley started planning for expansion in 1987 and got final approval from the Planning Department in 1989. After selecting contractors, the company started building a new improved store in June, 1993.
And the structure was completed by March 1994. Mr. John Ottewell supervised the construction process during excavation and structural building. "I oversaw the work in its early stages,'' said Mr. Ottewell. "I made sure the plans were carried out properly and done to specification. But I had no part in the interior or finishing work of the building. "Gareath (Adderley) took over from me. And he was responsible for all of the finishing work,'' he noted. The building was finished to substantial completion to coincide with the store's 100th Anniversary, said Mr. Adderley, adding that the store celebrated its centennial on December 29, 1994 with a cake cutting ceremony.
"Since the building was substantially completed, we've been concentrating on the floor, refrigeration and ceiling work,'' said Mr. Adderley. The new section of the store was opened in May, 1994 and work on the interior of the existing building began in July. Eurotile (Bermuda) brought in a hard wearing tile from Texas for the floors, noted Mr. Adderley. And the next step was refrigeration, where Gilbert Darrell was called in. All fridge and freezer units in T.A. Adderley are new except three small fridges which were kept to store beer and ice in the shop's new liquor section, added Mr. Adderley. Once the fridges were in place, the shelves, check-out counters, racks in the basement and shelves in the deep freezers were installed by Earnest Peats of Satronics. "Then it was a matter of stocking,'' said Mr. Adderley. "We're stocking the shelves slowly because we want customers to find a full service grocery. Our basic motto is if we haven't got it, you don't need it. "But if the customer wants something, we'll bring it in. We want to make T.A.
Adderley's a one-stop shopping centre. "Before we had a little bit of everything. But now we have complete sections,'' he noted. There is even a hot and cold deli which offers a variety of foods including jerk chicken, Jamaican patties, veggie patties, and beef, chicken or fish pies. The neighbourhood grocery store is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays.
