Senior banned after second DUI offence

A man was banned from the road for three years yesterday after he admitted two separate drink-driving charges.

Magistrates' Court heard that Samuel Richards, 65, was pulled over on May 14 after he made a sharp left turn in front of police at the corner of Dundonald Street and Parliament Street in Hamilton.

Police officers checked Richards' driving licence and discovered that there was a warrant for his arrest.

Officers also suspected Richards had been drinking. They took him to Hamilton Police Station, but he refused a breath test.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe heard that Richards was arrested on November 9 last year when he was stopped by police at a roadside breath-test checkpoint in Pembroke.

Richards was also fined a total of $4000 for the two offences.

Richards, from Devonshire, pleaded not guilty to the offences on May 15 and was scheduled to return to court on June 10 but failed to turn up.

He changed his pleas to guilty yesterday.
