Four in court over street brawl

Four young men have appeared in Magistrates’ Court charged with taking part in a street brawl outside the courthouse.Jaquii DeSilva, 17, and Sanchea Douglas, 16, both of Curving Avenue, in Pembroke, admitted participating in the punch-up outside the Dame Lois Browne Evans building on Wednesday afternoon. The pair also pleaded guilty to using a crash helmet as an offensive weapon, in an increased penalty zone within 100m of St Paul AME Preschool. Two others, both from Sandys, deny both charges.Lawyer Ed Bailey, representing Deunte Darrell, 19, of Crossfield Lane, and Trey Simons, 18, of Acacia Lane, characterised the fight as a “territorial dispute” between young men from rival areas of the Island.According to Crown counsel Susan Mulligan, police on mobile patrol on Court Street spotted a group of men fighting with helmets shortly before 3pm.Police tried to intervene, she said, but the group disregarded orders to stop and continued punching and kicking. The court heard that several officers had to struggle to separate them. All four were arrested, and charged with affray with an offensive weapon.Asked for an explanation by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, DeSilva said: “I’m sorry for what I did. We were outside fighting, that’s all.” Douglas declined to speak.Mr Warner ordered social inquiry reports on both, and remanded them into custody at the Coed Facility until February 16.Mr Darrell and Mr Simons each consented to wearing electronic monitoring bracelets, and will be confined to their homes subject to leave from probation officers. Each was granted bail of $2,000, with one surety, and ordered to stand trial on January 12.
