Accused barber says he was cutting hair at time of shooting

A Somerset barber accused of a shooting told detectives he is innocent, and was busy cutting hair at the time.Anwar Muhammad, 22, could not explain why gun shot residue was later found on his clothes, but suggested they may have been taken by someone else who committed the crime.Supreme Court has heard how two men on a motorcycle approached victim Princeton Burrows, then aged 19, near the Maximart supermarket in Sandys at 3.45pm on August 23 2010.Mr Muhammad is alleged to have been the pillion passenger who opened fire on the victim, leaving him injured. His accomplice is alleged to have been Shawn Williams.Mr Muhammad was arrested at his barber shop at 12.44pm on April 7 2011, on suspicion of carrying out the shooting. He is now on trial at Supreme Court charged with attempted murder and using a firearm to commit attempted murder, both of which he denies.Yesterday, the jury viewed a videotaped interview conducted with him the day after his arrest by Detective Constables Leroy Mathurin and Windol Thorpe of the Serious Crime Unit. The detectives told Mr Muhammad they had information suggesting he and Mr Williams were involved in the shooting, and invited him to tell them his whereabouts on the date in question. He replied that he attended a dentist’s appointment in town at 10am and was back at work by 1pm, where he remained at the time of the shooting. He was unable to provide the name of his dentist, saying he could not remember it. He could not tell the detectives who his barber shop clients were, and said he was the sole worker there.Asked if he knew Mr Burrows, he replied: “I never heard of him; never seen that boy in my life”.Quizzed over his relationship with Mr Williams, he confirmed he knew him, but said he was not his friend. The officers then informed Mr Williams that police found some clothing at Industrial Park Road in Southampton. The trial has previously heard from Detective Constable Vernell Burgess that the items were a sleeveless white tank top, a black Adidas sneaker and a black, red and white shirt, discovered near a fence bordering the property of the golf academy.Det Con Mathurin and Det Con Thorpe told Mr Muhammad his DNA was on the clothing, and one of the items also had gun shot residue [GSR] on it.He responded by telling them his clothes got wet when he was travelling to the dentist so he left them “up Fern Gully” in Somerset. He explained that he left them for his friend’s mother to wash and dry, but she was not home at the time.Mr Muhammad explained he had nowhere to live at the time, so he was staying with his friend and his mother, who he declined to name.He told the detectives he did not know how GSR got on the clothing, but suggested someone else may have picked the items up after he left them to be laundered, and “done some dumbness”.Asked by the detectives if he was a member of the MOB gang, he denied it, describing himself as a “legitimate businessman”.He explained he was trying to make money to help his mother out, and that his girlfriend was expecting his first child. The case continues.
