Man stole bike and tried to cash stolen cheque

A recovering drug addict was remanded pending sentencing after he admitted stealing a motorcycle and trying to cash a stolen cheque.Jamel Nesbit, 28, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to taking a vehicle without consent, stealing a cheque, making a false document and knowingly using a false cheque.Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess told the court that on January 18 this year, Nesbit entered the Somerset Branch of the Bank of Butterfield and attempted to cash a cheque made out to Nesbit with a value of $973.However, bank staff quickly noticed that the account in question, that of Charles Smith, didn’t have adequate funds. The staff contacted Mr Smith who responded that he had not written any such cheque. The bank staff then contacted police, but when officers arrived, Nesbit had already left the building, leaving his voter identification card behind. On February 7, officers on duty on Farmstead Lane, in Sandys, noticed Nesbit riding a Honda Airblade, which was reported stolen three days.Officers stopped and arrested Nesbit, who in an interview admitted stealing the motorcycle.Regarding the cheque, he said he found it and decided to try and cash it after relapsing into drug addition. He admitted going to the bank and attempting to cash the cheque, but left when he realised something was wrong. While Ms Burgess said that Nesbit was a suitable candidate for Drug Court, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said that Nesbit had been in an out of the court system since 1996, and had previously been sentenced to drug treatment, corrective training and imprisonment.Mr Warner ordered a social inquiry and drug assessment on Nesbit, remanding him into custody until March 30 for sentencing.
