Mum stole grandmother’s jewellery

A 23-year-old mother-of-two who cashed in nearly $10,000 worth of her grandmother’s jewellery has appeared in Magistrates’ Court.Aeisha Place, of St George’s, had initially reported a burglary of her grandmother’s residence on Winton Hill Lane, Hamilton Parish, but her nervous behaviour gave her away to police, according to Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney.Appearing before magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, Place admitted the May 13 to 22 offence, pleading guilty also to making a false report to police on May 22.The court heard that Place, described as a single mother-of-two and unemployed, told police she had been “in desperate need of cash”, and had taken jewellery belonging to Pearline Place from a safe in the home. She brought it to cash-for-gold stores in Hamilton. The total value of the rings, pendants, earrings and gold chains taken from the safe was said to be $9,819. At the time, Place had been staying in the home while her grandmother was away on holiday. Not all of the items were recovered.Mr Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report on Place, of Barrack Close, who must return to court for trial on July 26.She was granted bail of $5,000, with a surety to the same amount.
