Teen banned after high-speed chase

A St George’s high-school pupil has been banned from driving for 18 months after admitting leading police on a chase through Hamilton.

Calvin Wilson, 17, pleaded guilty to failing to stop for police, driving dangerously, driving without lights in the hours of darkness, driving while disqualified by age, and driving an unlicensed and uninsured vehicle.

All of the charges relate to a single incident on February 16.

The court heard that officers were directing traffic at the corner of Berry Hill and Tee Street when they saw a motorcycle with the driver and a passenger approach. They saw that both were wearing black ski masks and the vehicles lights were off and signalled for the vehicle to stop.

Instead, the vehicle continued towards Middle Road with police in pursuit.

The chase continued down Middle Road and onto Cavendish Road, where the motorcycle steered onto the north sidewalk and the eastbound lane while travelling west.

Police followed the motorcycle onto King Street, Victoria Street, Dundonald Street, and King Street again before heading into the Middletown area, where the rider lost control of the vehicle, sending both himself and his passenger to the ground.

While the rider, identified as Wilson, attempted to flee on foot, he was caught and arrested by officers.

Wilson was further charged with possessing a bladed article and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, but denied those offences.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered that a Social Inquiry Report be carried out on Wilson with a view to assessing his suitability for community service. Meanwhile, he banned the teenager from driving all vehicles for a period of 18 months.

He further set a trial date of May 27 for the remaining offences.
