Jermal Proctor’s 90 goes for naught in scathing opener for under-19s

Maple Leaf Cricket Club, Toronto (United States won toss): United States beat Bermuda by seven wickets

Bermuda suffered defeat against the United States in their opening match at the ICC Under-19 World Cup Americas Qualifier in Toronto, Canada, yesterday.

Arnold Manders’s team overcame an early-order collapse to post 163 for nine in their allotted 50 overs after being sent to bat on a damp pitch.

Bermuda were in a spot of bother at 60 for six before opener Jermal Proctor featured in two useful partnerships with lower-order pair Sa-Qui Robinson and Dionte Dowling to propel the island to a respectable total.

Somerset all-rounder Proctor topped Bermuda’s batting, lashing a six and three fours, during an attractive innings of 90 from 144 balls before being run out on the penultimate ball of the innings.

Robinson was the only other Bermuda batter in double figures, stroking 27 from 39 balls, while there were 17 extras.

Khush Bhalala (three for 18) and Arya Garg (two for 18) led the Americans’ bowling.

Bermuda’s total was ultimately not enough as their opponents replied with 164 for three in 27.1 overs to clinch the victory, with seamer Proctor unable to bowl because of cramp.

Pranav Natesa led the US batting with 64.

Fifth change Dowling (one for eight) was Bermuda’s most economical bowler.

Manders said his team was at a disadvantage having been asked to bat first in trying conditions.

“It rained all last night so the field was wet,” he said. “The match was delayed for an hour, we lost the toss so we were batting on a wet ground and lost a few early wickets.

“We also had tough decisions go against two of our batsmen, which didn’t help much, but we fought back to score 163 for nine.

“Not a bad team, USA, we just have to be a little bit better in the field and bowling line and length.

“It’s a learning process for them. They are young, one of the youngest teams in the tournament.”

Bermuda were also at a disadvantage in the field not being able to rely upon seamer Proctor who was unable to bowl during the Americans’ turn at the crease.

“Proctor had cramp so he was unable to bowl in the second innings,” Manders added. “He came on the field late just to help out, but he didn’t bowl anything.”

Yesterday’s remaining game saw hosts Canada thrash Argentina by 363 runs.

Canada piled up 408 for nine after being sent to bat before dismissing their opponents for a meagre 45 in 16.5 overs.

Bermuda are scheduled to face Argentina today.

Each country will face one another twice with the winner of the round-robin tournament advancing to the World Cup in Sri Lanka next year.
