PHC bowled out by Somerset for 13 with only one batter scoring runs
Somerset skittled out PHC for just 13 runs in the T20 Premier Division on Sunday, with only one PHC batter getting on the scoreboard.
PHC recorded ten ducks and only Koshun Durrant bothered the scorers with five runs and the eight wides bowled by Somerset were responsible for getting PHC into double figures.
In what is the most one-sided victory in the domestic cricket leagues for many years, Somerset lost no wickets, with JJ Nel scoring all their runs.
Somerset captain Dominic Sabir was ecstatic with his side’s bowling performance.
“I wanted to bowl first after seeing the wicket play low in the first game here,” Sabir said.
“I told the guys to bowl at the stumps and take some quick wickets. I never thought we would be this successful, but I am proud that we stayed focused and showed no sign of complacency. We were clinical from first ball to last.”
Somerset made the most of a slick wicket on which the ball was skidding across the surface, taking less than seven overs to end the PHC innings.
Opening pair Taurean Manders and Davin Dill came to the crease as normal after winning the toss and electing to bat, but surely could not have anticipated the movement the wicket delivered early on.
Somerset opening bowler Kwasi James was extremely errant with his line on the first ball of the game, which wicketkeeper Cofield Robinson could not collect before it raced to the third man boundary for five wides. After that he kept his line straight, with Manders playing straight to Dominic Sabir off his fifth ball.
PHC were helpless against the Somerset bowling attack, with Isaiah Richardson showing off his skills with a double-wicket maiden in his first over. Dill and No 4 bat Charles Trott then felt the wrath of Richardson’s immaculate length as PHC started to crumble.
James got his second scalp in the third over, bowling the usually composed Ori Wilson at leg stump to keep the rout on. Captain Trott’s dismissal the previous over must surely have knocked any patience or confidence PHC had right out of their collective system.
Young Isaac Todd tried his best to be patient under immense pressure. However, a combination of aggressive fielding and timidity to run between the wickets forced them to rethink any shot they thought was eligible for a run.
Todd tried to play an aggressive straight drive past bowler James, but Sabir was there to make a simple catch at cover. All but one of the PHC wickets fell with batsmen failing to score, meaning no one could even provide a crumb of comfort or a period of individual presence at the crease.
After Indian expatriate Parth Kanwar was bowled in Richardson's second straight double-wicket maiden over, the PHC ship was truly sunk. Every bat that came in thereafter, including Jahmari Beach, knew the task was to avoid embarrassment but all bar Durrant were unable to drag their side out of the mire.
Richardson and James cleaned up the bottom order with ease, taking down the PHC team for the incredible total of 13 in just 6.4 overs.
Somerset openers Jan-Johan Nel and Dominic Sabir rattled off the paltry amount of runs, with Nel crashing a six over mid-on to complete the ruthless win with 18 runs in just ten legal balls.
