Dominique Mayho warmed up for the Central American and Caribbean Games by completing a hat-trick of wins in the end-of-season IBC Criterium Championships yesterday.

Mayho, of Team Madison-Digicel, continued his dominance of the Island’s cycling scene, finishing the 30-lap race, which started and finished on Front Street, in a time of 54min 26.667sec.

Shannon Lawrence, of Team Tokio, placed second in 54:28.371, with David McComas, who is not affiliated to any team, coming third a lap behind in 54:28.097,

A punctured tyre forced Darren Glasford, of Team Winner’s Edge, to withdraw from the race on the final lap. Mayho said that he was buoyed by his performance considering he had taken a short break from the sport after the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships in Puerto Rico last month.

“I enjoyed that — it’s always fun winning,” said Mayho, whose superior sprinting ability told on the final lap. “Having taken some time off after the Caribbean Championships, I wasn’t sure what my form would be like, but I felt really good today.

“I was going into the Bird Cage and coming out really fast and I could sense that after a while [Shannon] was not closing the gap — that’s when I knew I had the victory.”

Mayho said that his main priority at the CAC Games in Veracruz, Mexico, was finishing the road race and not being pulled.

“It’s going to be one of the toughest races I’ve done this year because the Colombians will be there and they’re always particularly strong,” said Mayho, who represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the summer.

Joining Mayho in Mexico will be Zoenique Williams, of Winner’s Edge, who won yesterday’s 19-lap women’s race for the second successive year in 39:03.086. Karen Bordage, of Team Tokio, was second in 39:03.798, with Julia Hawley, of Team Winner’s Edge, finishing third in 39:42.294, a lap behind. Zoe Roberts was fourth in 39:32.963, two laps behind.

Nicole Mitchell, who is part of Bermuda’s CAC Games squad, did not race yesterday because of an illness. “I knew that Karen Bordage was strong and we opened up a gap almost as soon as we took off, so I think we knew it didn’t make any sense attacking each other,” said Williams, who claimed silver in the Elite Caribbean Championships road race for the second successive year, securing a spot for Bermuda at next year’s Pan Am Games in Toronto. “I always knew that I could probably take the sprint at the end.”

Bordage said that she was delighted with her second-place finish. “Zoenique and I took it out pretty hard and it was a really fun race,” she said.

“I was hoping to finish in the top three so I’m thrilled with second.”

Tyler Smith, of Team Winner’s Edge, won the 15-lap male junior race in 28:54.480, with Tristan Narraway, of Team Tokio, claiming victory in the 11-lap female junior race in 26:28.396.
