Why now?
It tripped off the tongue … Par-la-Ville Park, it had a nice ring to it, didn’t it?
It conjured up images of exactly what it is, an oasis in the middle of the Hamilton, a place where hundreds of people daily enjoy some R&R.
Well now it is going to be Queen Elizabeth II Park. Doesn’t have the same ring to it, somehow. (Sorry ma’am, there is no desire for one to head to the Tower ... but it has to be said.)
The renaming is to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, an event that seems to be receiving underwhelming attention here in Bermuda.
Maybe that is why the City of Hamilton decided to take the decision it did, but it does not seem to be universally popular take this comment that was left on the story on our website: “Makes sense as we just love The Queen down here in Bermuda. So much for having our own independent thought and honouring our own island residents. Two steps back! The legacy of colonialism is well and kicking.”
In today’s paper, the people we questioned about the renaming also raised the issue of colonialism and questioned the wisdom of renaming the park.
So you do have to question why this decision was taken and who actually made it. Surely if ever there was a case for doing something after a period of consultation this was it, Bermuda has many local heroes that it could honour.
