Raleigh Bermuda gets new home after triple rent hike

A youth development programme that broadens young Bermudians’ horizons overseas has been given a boost after moving to new headquarters in Smith’s.

Raleigh Bermuda, which was hit hard by its operation costs and soaring rent during the Covid-19 pandemic, will be able to grow its programmes after its relocation to 61 Verdmont Road.

Dany de Rodriguez, Raleigh’s executive director, said the group did not obtain a waiver for its operational costs when Covid-19 hit, while rent tripled and corporate funding was cut.

She added that staff were not seen as essential workers despite increased workload, with young people requiring more support and Raleigh addressing social ills including gang violence, drugs, alcohol and crime.

Rena Lalgie, the Governor, recognised the charity’s work in August 2021 by including Raleigh in a youth leadership summit.

Gita Blakeney Saltus, Raleigh’s president, came to the rescue with affordable space at Pathways Bermuda, an addiction-treatment service where she is executive director.

The building is also home to Gina Spence Productions.

Ms Blakeney Saltus said: “We feel that this holistic relationship is aligned with our core values and enables us all to address some of the critical needs of our young people and their families, in an environment that is conducive to fulfilling our respective missions.”

Raleigh’s new home increases its capacity to run youth programmes and take on new projects such as a vegetable garden and a men’s sanctuary.

It will also keep “Malcolm’s Room”, in honour of their alumnus, the late Malcolm K. Outerbridge Jr.

It provides a safe haven for youth in the community who are escaping abuse and toxic environments.

Raleigh Bermuda’s youth programmes serve more than 400 young people aged 14 to 35.

Its Brave Anti-Violence Programme caters to teens of 14 to 17, while the Venturer’s Scholarship Programme for young adults aged 17 to 24 offers expeditions to South Africa and Costa Rica.

Raleigh works with the Bermuda Police Service, the court and probation services, Child and Family Services and school counsellors.
