An exhibit and lecture at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute this month will centre on humpback whales.

Majestic Migrations: A look into the humpback whales of Bermuda features footage of whales captured by local photographer and researcher Andrew Stevenson.

A statement from BUEI said the multimedia exhibit showcases “three separate encounters with seven humpback whales — one female, one primary male escort and five other male humpbacks — as they navigate the shallow waters of Bermuda’s South Shore.”

Mr Stevenson’s passion for humpbacks began after he and his daughter Elsa saw one breach off Grape Bay in Paget in 2006.

Since then, Bermuda’s “Whale Man“ has identified more than 2,000 individual humpbacks in local waters, co-authored several scientific papers and produced two feature-length documentaries about the whales.

The first, Where the Whales Sing, released in 2010, won the Charman Prize at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art and the Best Emerging Underwater Filmmakers category at the Blue Ocean Film Festival and Conservation Summit in California.

His second documentary, The Secret Lives of the Humpbacks, was released in 2019.

Mr Stevenson will speak about humpback whales at the BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium on March 27, and Majestic Migrations will open to the public on March 28.

Tickets for the talk, which will begin at 7.30pm and include a question-and-answer session, are $20 for BUEI members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students with a valid ID.

An opening reception and private viewing for BUEI members will be held at 6.30pm. Light refreshments will be served.
