Proposals sought for Southlands seawall project
The Government has sought contractors to help install a seawall to protect the heavily eroded coastline of Southlands in Warwick.
A recent request for proposals, published on the government procurement website, called for prospective proponents to make submissions for the project.
The RFP said: “The Government is seeking the services of a suitably qualified and experienced contractor to undertake the excavation and stabilisation of a vulnerable cliff face, followed by the construction of a concrete seawall, positioned at the base of the cliff, to provide coastal protection.”
A planning application submitted last year proposed a seawall on the eastern side of the park’s coastline, effectively extending the seawall located at the neighbouring Bermudiana Beach property.
The documents said that while other options had been looked at, doing nothing was “considered unacceptable” given the rate of erosion and its potential impacts on the park and neighbouring properties.
The approval was granted planning permission last December.
According to procurement documents, the selected contractor for the project would be responsible for preparing the site for work, clearing debris, removing unstable material from the cliff face and creating the seawall.
The documents said: “A selection of suitable boulders and rubble should be kept on site, to be reused for the new seawall and backfill. The remaining excavated materials are to be removed from the beach and safely disposed of.
“The contractor shall construct the new seawall as per the contract drawings attached. The wall will butt up against an existing seawall and span over the cliff face for a distance of over 122ft.”
Proposals for the project must be submitted by 3pm on July 9.
