Terceira sells Olympic horse

Jillian Terceira and Queen Bee say their last farewell.

Bermudian show jumper Jillian Terceira has sold her Olympic mount, Bernadien van Westuur, to a young female equestrian.

Terceira, who represented Bermuda in two Olympic Games (2008 and 2012) and two Pan American Games (2007 and 2011), has been competing in international show jumping for several years. She said has now accepted that time has run out for her and her Olympic partner, also known as Queen Bee, who was foaled in 2001 and sired by renowned stud Toulon.

Terceira bought a half share of Bernadien van Westuur in January, 2011, describing her as “brave and keen, simple but wanted the freedom to jump.”

She said she bought the mare because she “believed she was a special mare who wanted to do everything for you.”

Terceira added: “And she did even more than that for me. My goal was to compete at the Pan American Games in 2011 and to qualify Bermuda for the London Olympics in 2012. She surpassed all my dreams and I give her all the credit for taking the Olympic journey with me.”

In addition to representing Bermuda at the Pan Am Games, where they finished eighth, and the 2012 London Olympics where they placed 47th individually, the pair have earned many top placings at the Grand Prix level throughout Europe, including fifth in the four-star GP in Treffen, Austria and seventh in the two-star GP in Valkenswaard, Netherlands this year.

Also this year they placed 12th in the four-star GP Fontainebleau, France, third in the two-star GP in Drammen in Norway and fourth in the two-star GP Vilamoura, Portugal.

In 2012 their top finishes included second in the Ladies Championship five-star in Vienna, Austria, sixth in the three star GP in Lamprechtshausen, Austria, third in the two-star GP in Valencia, Spain and sixth in the two-star GP in Valencia, Spain.
