Nahki Wells and Luton miss play-offs by one point
The season is over for Nahki Wells and Luton Town after they missed out on the League One play-off places by just one point.
Luton knew going into the final game of the season that they had to win away to Bolton Wanderers and hope other results went their way if they were to squeeze into the play-offs.
They kept their end of the bargain, producing a thrilling 3-2 win, with the deciding goal coming in the third minute of added time, but victories for Stockport County, Bradford City and Stevenage Borough ensured Luton were unable to leapfrog any of those teams into the top six.
While it did not cost his side, Wells missed a penalty in added time with his side already winning 3-2 when goalkeeper Jack Bonham saved his spot kick.
Missing the play-offs will count as a disappointment for Luton, who were preseason favourites for promotion after back-to-back relegations from the Premier League and Championship.
After a poor start to the season, head coach Matt Bloomfield was sacked in October and replaced with Jack Wilshere, the former Arsenal player who at the age of 34 is a year younger than Wells.
While the change did not produce enough of an improvement to make it into the play-offs, Wilshere did guide Luton to a win at Wembley, with Wells scoring twice in a 3-1 win in the EFL Trophy final against Stockport.
