Dockyard seawall in need of repair

“Critical” repairs to an ageing seawall in Dockyard have been earmarked by West End Development Corporation.

Andrew Dias, the general manager of Wedco, said that the quango had taken note of erosion to the inside of the North Camber, by King’s Wharf.

Mr Dias said yesterday: “We have just completed a review of the seawall, and I can confirm that there are several areas of erosion that will need to be attended to and that this will likely be completed in a phased approach.”

Repair jobs have been required for the roughly 200-year-old stone barrier, known as the North Arm, from storms such as Hurricane Gonzalo in October 2014, or Hurricane Fabian in September 2003.

Mr Dias said it had been “constantly exposed to many conditions that contribute to erosion or undermining — wind, waves, cruise ships and all other boats including the tugs”.

He said that the deterioration of the stone façade, visible above the waterline, could not be blamed on one factor, and there were “many vessels that contribute to erosion, inclusive of both the new and old tugs”.

Wedco has engaged engineers from the Ministry of Public Works to complete an assessment of areas needing attention.

“The outcome of the assessment will lead the direction and design of the required repairs,” Mr Dias said.

He added that it was too early to give an estimated cost of the works or the timelines.

“We do consider these works critical and immediate and therefore are expediting as efficiently as possible and to start as quickly as possible.”
