Family mourn loss of Nelson Macedo

Terribly missed: construction worker Nelson Macedo (Photograph supplied)

Police have identified the man who was killed in an industrial accident last week as 42-year-old Nelson Macedo.

A spokesman for the Bermuda Police Service said Mr Macedo, a Portuguese national from Ponta Delgada, Azores, was struck by a steel beam at about 5pm last Friday while working on a construction site in St George’s.

Mr Macedo, a father of one, was taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment but died a short time later.

In a Facebook post, Mr Macedo’s sister-in-law, Paula Costa-Macedo, paid an emotional tribute.

Ms Costa-Macedo, who lives on the island with her husband, Lino Macedo, wrote: “Nelson, you were not my brother-in-law, but my brother.

“Your brother Lino is lost without you. Nelson, you really were your brother’s keeper. You two always had each others back.

“Both of you were always telling me stories of childhood, how you’re only 11 months apart and always together. I used to call you the other women in my marriage and you use to laugh your head off.

“Everyone who knew you loved you. You were always up for a good time and a laugh. You always had the best intentions for everyone, even if they did you wrong.

“We already miss you terribly and its only been two days since you left us. As much as we are grieving you, I know it’s nothing compared to your daughter and parents.

“Know that even though we are far away, whatever your daughter needs we will be there for her. Until we meet again my brother.”

Officers from the Bermuda Police Service forensic support unit processed the scene following the incident, which is believed to have taken place at a site in Tucker’s Town.

A senior safety officer from the Department of Environmental Health also inspected the site, and government health officials are now working with police to establish the cause of the accident.

The matter remains under investigation, and an autopsy is anticipated in due course.
