A deep dive into Bermuda’s history and culture has been offered to the public for next week free of charge.

The National Museum of Bermuda will host its annual Community Day on February 25, complete with food vendors, door prizes and countless free activities.

Elena Strong, the director of the NMB, said: “We want to put community at the centre of our national museum.

“By removing the barrier of admission during Free for February and our Community Day, we hope everyone can engage with Bermuda's history and culture, fostering a sense of belonging and collective heritage."

Yoga teacher Lisa Wingood will teach a breathing and movement class open to all ages and abilities, and artists Jayde Gibbons and Graham Foster will host short talks on their exhibits FAMILY (FAM, I Love You) and Hall of History.

Rajai Denbrook will read two Bermudian folktales to young attendees that were taken from Florenz Maxwell’s book The Spirit Baby and Other Bermudian Folktales.

Jake Commandeur, an art educator and teacher at Saltus Grammar School, will use the museum’s Bermuda Family Scrapbook exhibit as inspiration for a communal clay sculpture about family and memory.

The sculpture will later be put up for display in the museum.

Michael Bradshaw will give a lecture analysing objects from the Princess Royal Union Lodge, a branch of the Independent Order of Good Samaritans and Daughters of Samaria society, which empowered Black Bermudians for more than a century.

Other activities will include games in the Keep Yard, family scavenger hunts, a Black History in Bermuda digital tour through the Smartify app and a Q&A with the museum’s curatorial team.

The Community Day will also feature a musical performance by Bermudian musician Rivah, cannon firings to mark the lunch hour, two Dolphin Quest demos and a closing performance by Warwick Gombeys at 3pm.

Food and drink stalls will be run by Four Ways, Pacos Tacos, Ashley’s Lemonade and Winky Dinky Dog. Attendees are encouraged to bring cash for purchases.

Dockyard Brewing Company will offer free coffee to those who arrive before 11am and offer free samples of craft beer.

The Community Day will run from 9.30am to 5pm on February 25, with activities taking place from 10am to 3pm.
