Island magistrates took part in a virtual training course last month.

Senior magistrate and Coroner Maxanne Anderson participated in A Practical Course for Coroners and Judges with magistrates Maria Sofianos, Aura Cassidy and Tyrone Chin, and Lyndon Raynor, Sergeant for the Coroner’s Office.

Representatives from Britain, the Turks & Caicos, the Bahamas, Brunei, Singapore, St Lucia and the Isle of Man also took part in the training.

Sir Peter Thornton, KC, led the training under the auspices of the Civil Service College in London.

The course, which included presentations from members of the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association, involved an examination and deliberation on legal frameworks, practices and customs in different countries.

It also highlighted how different jurisdictions addressed fatalities in custody, jury inquests and Covid-19-related deaths and the proper procedure for conducting coroner’s inquests.

Ms Anderson called the training “timely and relevant for Bermuda as we embark on the task of reviewing our existing legislation to correspond it with international standards within the current legal landscape.”
