Organisers of the Local Qualifier for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship have addressed confusion surrounding this year’s event at Port Royal Golf Course.

The competition was initially extended to 54 holes this year to allow players the opportunity to earn more ranking points, but confusion arose after BPGA president Scott Roy said it had reverted back to its original 36-hole format.

He later confirmed that the event, which takes place between on October 17 and 18, will remain at 54 holes this year as originally planned.

However, doubts remained over the format amid a number of concerns raised by players over the change, which organisers have addressed in an effort to clear the matter up.

“The Bermuda Golf Association, Bermuda Professional Golfers’ Association and tournament officials are pleased to announce the Local Qualifier for this year’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship will be played Tuesday, October 17 and Wednesday, October 18 with Thursday, October 19 reserved as a rain day,” read the statement.

“The format will remain as a 54-hole event, with 36-holes played on Tuesday and the final 18 holes on Wednesday.”

A spokesperson for the event acknowledged one of the concerns raised by the players having to play two rounds in a single day.

“The Local Qualifier sub-committee received feedback from members of the BPGA in relation to playing 36-holes in one day,” the spokesperson said. “As a result, we explored the option to play three rounds over three days.

“After chatting with the PGA Tour team, in order to allow the course time to fully repair, they have requested that we stick to the original plan and play 36 holes on Tuesday and the final 18 holes on Wednesday.”

The Bermuda APGA Championship takes place on October 26 to 28, with the Bermuda Championship to be held from November 9 to 12. The winner of the APGA event will receive exemption in the Bermuda Championship.

The Local Qualifier is open to professional golfers, amateur golfers, and applicants for reinstatement. To be eligible to compete, participants must possess Bermudian status, be in good standing with the BGA and BPGA and not subject to any disciplinary process or sanction of either association.
