Dwayne Pearman’s comeback from injury gathers momentum

Dwayne Pearman’s phenomenal golf career came to a grinding halt after having groin surgery last December.

However, the experienced teaching professional has made a remarkable comeback over the past several months, capturing two titles as he continues to go from strength to strength.

“It’s nice to come back off an injury and still be able to win as it’s only been nine months,” Pearman told The Royal Gazette.

“It feels okay and I just take it as it comes. I just do the best I can with what I got.”

Pearman secured a maiden win on the Moongate Tour in July and followed that with victory at last month’s Johnnie Walker Classic.

“It feels good to win and it’s nice to know that I still have a little bit left in me,” he added.

“I still practice and work hard on my game and still like to try and win. It doesn’t always happen that way but I just try and put my best foot forward every time I get out there and sometimes it works and sometimes it don’t.

‘“In golf you take what it gives you and if you put your time in and work hard at some point you can get some good breaks.

“I like the way I am hitting the ball now. I am hitting it pretty solid and things have been working out okay.”

Pearman said winning last month’s 36-hole Johnnie Walker Classic at Ocean View Golf Course by a solitary stroke was especially sweet given his age.

“As you get older you do appreciate it more,” he added. “I won it back in my 20s, 30s and 40s and to still be able to win it at 60 is a good accomplishment.

“I think it’s a good thing and you do appreciate it a bit more the older you get because time is running out, so you have to cherish the ones you get in these days.

“It’s nice to still be winning at 60 because you look at a lot of the other sports like tennis, cricket and soccer and you don’t see too many people winning at 60, so I will take it.”

Inspired by the success he has enjoyed in recent months, the highly decorated player will now attempt to qualify for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship when he tees off in the 54-hole Local Qualifier at Port Royal Golf Course on October 17 to 18.

Pearman competed in the inaugural Butterfield Bermuda Championship in 2019 after being granted a sponsor’s exemption and, if all goes accordingly, hopes to showcase his talents at this level again before calling time on a highly successful career.

“It would be nice to get in again having played in the first year,” he said. “I didn’t play great but it was a nice experience.

“I was exempted the first year, so I haven’t qualified for it, but I will try and qualify for it and we will see how it goes. It’s 54 holes and I am just going to take it as it comes.

“There are a lot of guys out there that are playing well and everyone is trying to get in, so we will see how it goes. Everybody is going to give it their best shot.”
