Gymnasts clean up at Games

Bermuda’s gymnasts claimed ten medals on the second day of the Island Games in Jersey on Saturday seven golds, a silver and two bronze.The Islanders won 24 medals at the biennial event, having scooped 14 on the opening day of the Games.In the junior age group (ages 10-12), Sadia Wilson was in top form for Bermuda, winning gold on vault, bars, beam, and the all-around. On floor she took the bronze medal.Tais Burgess-Allen also earned a medal for Bermuda, placing third on the balance beam.In the seniors, Morgan Beckles led the team with two golds on vaulting and the floor. Tabytha Hofheins was impressed, winning gold on the uneven bars and a silver in the all-around.Zantae Dill took away a bronze, placing third on bars.Women’s teamcrush DominicaBermuda women’s national football team thumped Dominica 5-0 in their third and final match at the preliminary Olympic qualifiers in the Dominican Republic on Saturday.The Islanders’ goals came from Cheyra Bell (2), Tschana Wade, Keunna Dill, Khyra Brangman and Donte Allen.Scott Morton’s team finished third in the four-team group and failed to advance to the next stage of the competition.Place runsout of steamBermuda sprinter Jeneko Place had a disappointing run in the 200 metres semi-finals at the World Youth Championships finishing last in race.Place, who won two silver medals at the 2010 Carifta Games, posted a time of 22.03 seconds on Saturday and failed to qualify for yesterday’s final.The seventh edition of the Championships was held in Lille, France.
