In full bloom: embracing the season as it blooms
Spring in Bermuda doesn’t arrive with a single moment, it builds. You start to notice it in the colour returning to gardens, in the way a simple arrangement can shift a room, in how people begin to open up their spaces again.
It’s less about redesign and more about refinement — bringing in elements that feel fresh, alive, and in step with the season. For many, that starts with florals and the small details that frame a home.
We spoke with Elizabeth Blankendal, owner of Demco Bermuda, about what’s showing up right now, what works locally and how Bermudians are using flowers and home pieces to reset their spaces for spring.
1. What does spring look like in Bermuda right now — through flowers and how people are styling their spaces?
Spring in Bermuda right now feels like a bit of a reset. Winter was quite rough in some regards, with a lot of rain and unpredictable weather patterns, so there’s a real sense of welcoming the sun again and leaning into the season.
We’re seeing a beautiful mix of hyacinths, lisianthus, roses, peonies, freesias, hydrangeas, and tulips coming through with some softer and more romantic, others a bit more structured.
People are gravitating towards florals that bring freshness into their spaces, but in a way that still feels natural and considered. It’s less about anything overly arranged and more about natural, thoughtful placement — something on a table, a kitchen counter, or a small moment that brings a space to life.
2. What are people buying now that feels different from a few months ago?
There’s definitely been a shift towards lighter, more seasonal choices. A few months ago, things felt heavier and more compact, whereas now people are leaning into florals that feel softer and a bit more expressive. We have seen popularity and demand for tulips, freesias, lisianthus, and peonies in particular. There’s also a noticeable change in how people are shopping. It’s less about picking up something quickly and more about being intentional, considering final placement and/or the end recipient.
3. What colours or styles are dominating right now, in both florals and home pieces?
There’s a nice balance at the moment. Some people are still drawn to earthy tones and neutrals, especially in the home, while others are embracing pinks, softer pastels and brighter seasonal colours as we move towards Mother’s Day.
Stylistically, everything feels a bit more relaxed yet fun. Florals are looser, more natural in shape, and not overly structured. The same applies across the shop, we have some gorgeous new pieces that feel unique, elevated and not overly expensive.
4. What actually works in Bermuda this time of year when it comes to plants or florals?
This time of year, it’s important to choose florals that not only look beautiful but also hold well in the climate. Chrysanthemums, hydrangeas and orchids, when cared for properly, tend to perform consistently and last well.
At home care is so important when it comes to longevity, and we always guide customers on how to get the most out of their arrangements. Recently, we had a customer call to thank us for an arrangement that lasted nearly three weeks. It had been gifted to her during a personal loss, and she shared how much it meant to her during that time.
5. How are people pulling their spaces together right now — flowers, tables, patios, small details?
People are thinking more holistically about their spaces right now. It’s not just about adding flowers, but how everything works together, especially when it comes to entertaining or everyday living.
What’s been really nice to see is how customers are pairing florals with pieces from around the shop, unique vases, tablecloths, placemats, candles and even small decorative accents to create something that feels complete. There’s a real focus on the table and shared spaces, whether indoors or out.
While many people know us for our florals, our retail offering has quietly become a bit of a best kept secret. It allows customers to build out a space that feels layered, thoughtful and personal, without it feeling overdone.
6. What’s the easiest way to refresh a space for spring without doing a full overhaul?
The easiest way is to make a few intentional updates rather than changing everything. Fresh flowers are always the starting point, but beyond that, it’s often the smaller pieces that make the biggest difference.
We’re seeing customers gravitate towards our decorative pillows, artwork, trays etc. Simple additions that shift the feel of a room quite quickly. There’s also been a growing appreciation for the local brands we carry, which add something a bit more unique and personal to a space. At Demco, it’s really about offering pieces that feel elevated but still accessible, so people can refresh their homes in a way that feels effortless and considered.
