Appleby has appointed Daniel Burkitt, an international disputes and insolvency lawyer, as a partner in its Bermuda office to boost its capabilities in complex restructuring and cross-border litigation.

The firm said Mr Burkitt joins its dispute resolution practice with experience in high-value insolvency and restructuring matters, as well as commercial and company disputes, including shareholder cases, digital assets, re/insurance and trust litigation.

Before moving to Bermuda, Mr Burkitt practised as a barrister in London for 12 years at Three Stone, the chambers of John McDonnell KC, and later worked at a global law firm in the British Virgin Islands. There, he acted for the joint liquidators of Three Arrows Capital, a cryptocurrency hedge fund that once managed about $9 billion in assets.

His work has included international cases with a United States dimension, including involvement in a $1.5 billion claim in the Chapter 11 proceedings of FTX.

John Wasty, head of dispute resolution in Bermuda at Appleby, said the appointment reflects growing demand for expertise in complex disputes.

“Daniel brings outstanding expertise in complex insolvency and restructuring disputes, with a practice spanning high value commercial matters, digital assets and international litigation,” Mr Wasty said. “His arrival reinforces the strength of our top ranked dispute resolution team in Bermuda.”

Mr Burkitt said he was “excited to join Appleby’s internationally renowned dispute resolution team in Bermuda” and to build on the firm’s reputation in insolvency and restructuring.

He is recognised by Chambers and Partners and Legal 500, with clients describing him as “well prepared, unflappable and brilliant on his feet”.

Mr Burkitt is Called to the Bar of England and Wales and the British Virgin Islands. He has also taught at the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics, and co-authored Trade Mark Licensing.
