Driver with mobile puts people at risk

Dear Sir,

As I was driving into Hamilton today, January 10, from the East End, I noticed that there was a white car (licence number 3272?) that was close behind me.

It was being driven by a female who had one hand on the steering wheel and the other hand holding her mobile phone.

She continued to drive close to me while still talking on her phone. At one point, she had no hands on the steering wheel because she was using her phone and drinking from a thermal mug.

When we stopped briefly, I made a mental note of her licence number.

As we proceeded into town, there was a police car parked on the side of the road. I glanced in my rear-view mirror and she quickly put the phone down, but as soon as we went past, she was back on the phone.

I do not understand what could have been so important to drive and talk on the phone. If it was so important, she should have pulled over to continue her conversation.

Instead, she preferred to put herself and others at risk by driving the way she did.

LIZZIE

Editor’s note: the licence number of the white car has been partially redacted from the letter in the interest of honouring the driver’s privacy. But you know who you are.
