Reef wrecks in spotlight at film night

The next in the Historical Heartbeats Lecture Series will be a Film Night at Bermuda National Library at 6pm on Thursday, January 22, screening two 30-minute films from Brendan Hollis’ About Bermuda Series.

The first film will be Shipwrecks, which explores how the remains of sailing ships, steamships, paddle-wheelers, pleasure yachts, warships, Spanish galleons and passenger liners can all be found hidden amongst the reefs surrounding Bermuda.

The second film, Blockade Days in St George’s, explores the eventful days in St. George’s during the American Civil War. The extent to which the town was transformed into a confederate arsenal and entrepot is vividly shown through the use of contemporary paintings blended with scenes of St George’s.

Afterwards, Bermuda’s wrecks custodian, Dr Philippe Rouja, will be on hand to answer questions.

This event is free to the public. For more information, contact Folklife Officer Dr. Kim Dismont Robinson on 292-1681 or visit www.communityandculture.bm.

A stylish start to 2015, the Caledonian Society of Bermuda’s Annual Burns Supper will be at Rosewood Tucker’s Point on Saturday, January 24.

A Burns Supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns, author of many famous poems and songs. A few examples include Auld Lang Syne (yes, the one we all sing at New Year), To a Mouse (the phrase “the best laid schemes o’ mice and men gang aft agley” comes from this poem) and Tam O’ Shanter (considered by many to be one of the best examples of the narrative poem in European literature).

You do not have to be a literary buff to enjoy this, you just have to enjoy delicious food with entertaining toasts and speeches.

The pre-dinner cocktail reception (cash bar) will be from 6.30pm until 7.30pm, with the five-course dinner beginning at 7.30pm.

The ticket price is $110 per person and available online at www.pTix.bm or from Ewan McGill at ewanmcgill@kpmg.bm.

It usually sells out in advance so don’t delay in getting your tickets.

Details on confirmed speakers and the menu will be at www.caledoniansocietyofbermuda.com shortly.

Who called a special meeting before Jesus had The Last Supper? Now for the first time, based on a broad-based discussion with local church leaders, and after reading extensively, playwright Dale Butler brings his third play, The Second Last Supper, to the stage after his great success with the acclaimed We are Climbin’ Jacob’s Ladder and Hubert Smith.

The show will run from Thursday, March 26, until Saturday, March 28, at St. Paul AME Centennial Hall, with showtime at 7pm sharp each night.

An all star cast and live band involve you with an earth shattering opening and triumphant ending that reveals the strengths and weaknesses of a movement that was almost on its knees hours before the Crucifixion.

Tickets are $25, or $50 for patrons, and available from St Paul AME Church office or at the door.

For more information contact: Dale Butler 505-3409 or daledbutler@gmail.com.
