Grant Gibbons said 18 people and eight companies were represented, "spanning the gamut of local security companies and some people in the process of forming a company for the purpose of bidding.'' The deadline for tenders for the three-year contract is May 15.

The successful contractor is to provide "airfield access security personnel,'' securing gates at the Airport now manned by Bermuda Police, and patrolling a new fence around the airstrip.

BURGLARS HIT HOTEL ROOMS CRM Burglars hit hotel rooms Thieves continued to target visitors this week.

Three separate incidents of break-ins or attempted break-ins were reported to Police.

Visitors staying at a Smith's Parish hotel said their room was entered overnight on Tuesday and thieves escaped with a leather wallet containing cash, credit cards and personal cheques.

An attempted break-in was reported at another room in the same hotel, but a security system prevented the culprits from entering.

Thieves also broke into a room at a Warwick hotel on Tuesday and stole two wallets and a watch while the occupants slept.

CLOTHES STOLEN CTS Clothes stolen Eighty hours of community service were ordered for a woman who stole childrens' clothes.

"I don't see any sense in why you would conduct yourself in this manner,'' the Wor. Cheryl-Ann Mapp told Leah Woodley, 24, of Friswell's Hill, Pembroke.

"This is not a very good example to set to your children.'' Woodley admitted stealing a child's two-piece track suit from Karl's Guys & Dolls.

Yesterday, Woodley said she was unemployed but was willing to do community service. Ms Mapp ordered her to return to court in three months for a review.

EXPENSIVE KNIFE CTS Expensive knife A Hamilton Parish man yesterday found out trash digging can be expensive.

Winston C. Spencer, 32, of East Point Lane, admitted in Magistrates' Court to possessing a prohibited weapon.

Police officers saw Spencer acting suspiciously on Court Street shortly before 2 p.m. on November 22.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said during a search of Spencer, Police found a butterfly knife.

Spencer told Police he did not know that the knife -- which had a four-inch blade -- was prohibited.

He said he found it while cleaning out someone's garage.

The Wor. Cheryl Ann Mapp told Spencer before fining him $250: "Don't take things that you find. You're better off keeping them in the trash.''
