Workers practise an old tradition

painstakingly building a traditional Bermuda stone wall, shaping by hand every piece to fit like a jigsaw.

The work at Hog Bay Park, Somerset, is expected to last another three weeks and has been commissioned by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Mr. Tony McCarron, of Bermuda Walls Ltd., said: "It's made without any cement and the stone is cut to fit exactly in place. It stands up much better than concrete walls because the wind goes through it.'' Altogether the company is building about 600 yards of the wall and Mr McCarron added: "It is painstaking work.''
