Charities cash in on doctor's holiday

A visiting doctor cycled, fished and putted her way around the Island yesterday in a bid to raise money for British charity.

Dr. Helen Fallon, of Manchester, England, decided to mix community activism with her first trip to Bermuda.

The orthopaedic surgeon told The Royal Gazette that she could not sit around and do nothing during her week-long stay with her local cousins.

"I'm not used to going on holiday and doing nothing,'' she said. "I thought I would do some fund raising during my visit. I usually raise money for charities.

"I heard of the size of Bermuda and thought I'd try to do something in each parish,'' Dr. Fallon added. "I have been thinking about doing this for four months. I collected sponsors the week before I left England.'' She estimated that she will raise some 600 for three medical charities in the UK.

Dr. Fallon's odyssey began at 5.30 a.m. in St. George's with a fishing trip on Joe Kelly's boat Mess Around .

By 10 a.m. she had checked out Crystal Caves and moved on to Lee Bow Riding Centre in Devonshire for a quick trot along a trail.

Then it was on to Spittal Pond in Smith's for a bit of bird watching before taking a spin around Botanical Gardens on roller blades.

And by 1.30 p.m. Dr. Fallon was sailing away from Hamilton Harbour to go snorkelling.

After that she cycled her way through Warwick en route to Southampton Princess to play nine holes of golf.

Dr. Fallon finished her day with some water skiing in Sandy's.

"Everyone in Bermuda has been very helpful,'' she said. "The beaches are gorgeous, but it is a little more built up than I thought.

"There is a lot to do here and I love sports.''
