Waits to headline
A story in Thursday's paper failed to mention the location and time of Eddie Ming's 20th annual drum competition and buffet show. The event, featuring American drummer Nasheet Waits will be held on Saturday at St. Paul's Centennial Hall. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the show will start at 5 p.m.
Nasheet Waits will headline a group of foreign and local musicians at a drum exhibition and buffet show this Saturday.
Mr. Waits who hails from Manhattan, New York, has already arrived and is gearing up for the event.
Following closely in the shoes of his father who came to the Island for the first show of its kind 20 years ago, the younger Waits said he was looking forward to show casing his talents.
"My father played the drums,'' he explained. "I grew up in a musical household but I only took it up seriously six years ago after my father passed away.
"I moved back home and all his equipment was still there and accessible to me and I was able to emote and express myself without speaking.'' Mr. Waits talents have taken him as far as Japan and Montreal where he participated in a jazz festival.
He has also traveled in Europe and performed with such noted musicians as Max Roach and M'Boom, Ginger Baker and Tony Williams.
His host Eddie Ming said he hoped that Mr. Waits will inspire others to take up percussion.
Alongside Mr. Waits, will be several of Mr. Ming's students, Ghandi Burgess and his jazz ensemble -- Winston DeGraff, Lionel Edwards, Stu Gilbert, Dennis Fox, and Dennis Moniz -- will also be performing.
The concert will also feature guest percussionist Robert Sai Emery, and Tim Marshall.
And guests can expect to enjoy seafood macaroni, vegetarian chili, and chicken fried rice from the buffet menu.
Tickets, at $20 for adults and $16 for children, are on sale at Ricky's Barber Shop, 27th Century Boutique, and the Music Box.
