Interested in finding out how Bermuda’s plants and herbs can help keep you healthy?

A new book by Kuni Frith-Black promises to hold the answers.

‘Bermudian Folk Remedies: Using Medical Botanicals for Common Ailments’ is the first of its kind in Bermuda, according to the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.

“[This] colourful 123-page book offers a wealth of information on local plants and their medicinal uses,” said a spokeswoman. “The book incorporates [her] academic background on herbal healing and features remedies and treatment using Bermuda’s plants and herbs. It also features stories about herbal remedies by Bermudian elders and natural skin and hair care treatments.”

Culture Minister Wayne Scott was present at the book’s launch last week.

“As we know, folk remedies have always been part of the Bermudian culture. These remedies have been passed on from generation to generation. I am sure most of us can remember at least one remedy that our grandparents or even great-grandparent used to treat all sorts of aliments and illness. This book gives a glimpse into our Bermudian past, painting a portrait of one of our Island home’s unique traditions — folk medicine.”

Bermudian Folk Remedies will be available at bookstores and the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, from December 13. The book can be ordered online at www.communityandculture.bm
