British violinist Sally Potterton is really playing up Bermuda.

Her music video filmed at Admiralty House Park has been liked 87,000 times on Facebook. The 26-year-old Londoner was stunned by its success.

“It’s only been a week since it was posted,” she said. “I thought maybe a couple hundred people might watch it, mainly my family and friends.

“It has been amazing to see the power of social media. It’s been shared over 1,000 times.”

The video is a cover of Rockabye Baby by Clean Bandit.

“I think the success of the video is due to a combination of the beautiful Bermuda scenery together with the soundtrack,” she said.

She played over a remix of the original song, which topped British pop charts in 2016.

Ms Potterton said some people were surprised to hear a violin playing contemporary music, as violins are more often associated with classical music.

She came to Bermuda earlier this month on a one-week contract with the cruise ship Oriana, playing with the violin duo Elektra.

“A good friend of mine just moved out there in September to teach,” said Ms Potterton. “I thought I might as well stay with her and have a visit for a few days.”

She has been here before to play with Silken Strings at the John Lennon Tribute concert in 2014.

“When I was here for that I met a load of video guys after the concert,” she said. “They were filming the Ocean Vet programme.”

This time, she got in touch with some of them when she arrived and was directed to John Singleton and Alia Hamza. “We did a couple hours of shooting,” said Ms Potterton. “Alia did the close-ups. John filmed with a drone. Afterwards, Alia edited it for me really quickly.”

Ms Potterton said the biggest worry was the weather.

“The ship I was performing on docked the day before and the weather was really clear, but before that apparently it had been raining a lot in Bermuda,” she said. “We also had to change course away from a storm near Bermuda.

“On the cruise it was quite rocky. I was convinced the weather might not be good enough, but then luckily that morning it was really clear. As I got off the ship I could see it was sunny in some places. It only took a few hours for the cloud to clear.”

To make the video she had to play her song 10 to 12 times.

It was a little windy that day which made it difficult for her to hear the music playing from a small speaker she’d brought along.

“We had to hide the speaker under loads of leaves or in the bushes so it wouldn’t show in the film,” she said. “Sometimes the speaker would run out of batteries.”

She filmed similar covers with André SaxMan Brown in Rome and at the Bluebird Restaurant in Chelsea, London.

She started playing violin in Hertfordshire at the age of 3, learning through the Suzuki Method.

“I learnt by ear and by patterns,” she said. “I had a knack for it. I was quite a tall child so I could hold up the violin.”

She was good at improvising which made it easier for her to later play her favourite pop songs. “Having that early Suzuki training helped me be a bit freer,” she said.

When she was younger she imagined herself playing in an orchestra, but it didn’t work out that way.

“I started doing corporate events on an electric violin and realised it was a niche thing to do,” she said. “All my skills suited it more than an orchestra.

“Most of the work I do is improvising over a DJ. I have played at weddings and corporate parties all over the world. I have done a lot of stuff in Thailand with André.”

She has also done gigs in Lebanon, Sweden and Bahrain.

“When I was little I never imagined that playing the violin would take me to beautiful places like Bermuda,” she said.

The Admiralty House music video has already led to new gigs for her, and an invitation to play at Tobacco Bay in the summer.

“Nothing is definite yet,” she said, “but I’d love to come back to Bermuda to perform. After seeing the video my boyfriend said he wants to come to Bermuda for a vacation.”
