Teen caught at school on a Saturday

A 19-year-old got more than a scolding when he was found sitting at a school teacher's desk when he didn't have permission to be on the premises of the Mount Saint Agnes Academy in Dundonald Street. As he tried to explain why he was found in the classroom sitting at the teacher's desk, Omar Kareem Govia said: "I was there because a girl had brought me to the classroom and then she left and the teacher came."

Govia said he had lied to the Police by not telling them about the girl because he did not want her to get in trouble.

Prosecutor Anthony Blackman told Magistrates' Court that, on November 7 around 4.30 p.m., Govia had entered the premises of the school without permission and had gone into one of the classrooms and was sitting at a teacher's desk when a teacher at the school entered the classroom and found him.

He said Govia had claimed he was waiting there because he had to "receive an item" from someone.

Govia, of Deepdale Road West, Devonshire, who pleaded guilty to trespass, was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to stay away from the school.

American visitor hid marijuana in her bra

An American visitor was caught with marijuana hidden in her bra. Deborah Kelly Scarpa, 48, admitted attempting to bring the drug onto the Island when she appeared in Magistrates' Court and was given a $1,000 fine.

The court was told she was found to have a package containing 3.89 grammes of the drug, with a street value of $175, when she was taken to a search room at the Customs and Immigration building in St. George's last week.

Crown counsel Anthony Blackman told the court that Scarpa, of Florida, was proceeding though the Customs area when one of the sniffer dogs showed an interest in her.

She was asked by Customs officials if she was carrying any drugs but said no. However, the sniffer dog continued to show an interest in the American and she was taken to a search room where she admitted that she was carrying some drugs and produced a package from her bra containing the marijuana.

In court Scarpa told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: "I'm sorry. I've never had any other arrests or been in trouble."

Man fumbled over false name he gave to Police

Pretending to be one of the Island's top tennis players, but then not being able to spell the name correctly, proved to be a give away for Akil Williams when he was arrested by Police as officers scoured the streets on the look-out for drug dealers.

The 24 year old ran off when a Police patrol stopped to question him and another man on Elliott Street on Friday, but Williams was caught by pursuing officers on a nearby street.

"Police officers were on duty along Elliott Street in a marked vehicle when they saw the defendant," said Crown counsel Anthony Blackman at Magistrates' Court. "They thought he was acting in a suspicious manner and they told him they intended to search him under the Misuse of Drugs Act. "He ran away and the officers gave chase."

Mr. Blackman said that when Williams, of Riviera Estate Road, Warwick, was eventually questioned he gave his name as Javon Whitter. However, suspicion was aroused because he did not spell the tennis player's name correctly and when he was further questioned at Hamilton Police Station, Williams revealed his true identity.

He was not found to be in possession of any drugs but was charged with obstructing Police officer Carlton Jackson and giving a false name to a Police officer.

Williams pleaded guilty to both charges, but in mitigation said the officers had not said they were going to search him. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told Williams: "If you run away from them then they are not going to be able to."

Williams was fined $300 for each offence.
