Woman fined for harassing phone calls to another woman

A Southampton woman who was fined $500 for making numerous harassing phone calls said she tried to telephone and apologise to the victim, but her telephone calls weren?t returned.

Shawnette Flood, 40, of Southampton Road, a Capital G manager, pleaded guilty to making persistent phone calls for the purposes of causing annoyance.

Crown Counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court that starting May 6 a Sleepy Hollow Drive, Hamilton Parish woman received a number of harassing telephone calls that sometimes awakening her and her five-year-old son.

When she answered the caller hung up, or left an obscene message on her voice mail.

?Eventually the complainant used caller identification to trace the calls, and contacted the police department,? said Mr. Mahoney. ?They found that it was definitely Flood making the telephone calls. She telephoned the complainant over 60 times calling sometimes early in the morning or late at night.?

When confronted by police, Flood admitted to making the calls. She told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo: ?I have since left a message saying to call me, but she didn?t respond. I have apologised and it has ceased.?

Before fining Flood, the Senior Magistrate said, ?You are charged with being a nuisance and an annoyance. That is enough even if there is no exchange.?

Man fined for causing accident

A Hamilton Parish man who caused a road traffic accident was given $900 in traffic fines on Thursday in Magistrates? Court.

Gregory Grant, 33, of Cottage Hill Road pleaded guilty to driving a motorcycle while impaired by alcohol and drugs and guilty to having no drivers licence.

Crown Counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court that on November 30, 2005, police responded to a single road traffic accident involving Grant.

?He definitely identified himself as the driver of the cycle at the time of the collision,? said Mr. Mahoney. ?His breath smelled of alcohol and his eyes were glazed and speech was slurred.?

When questioned Grant admitted that he had had a few drinks.

?He said ?yes, it was my fault. I slid out there,,? said Mr. Mahoney.

Grant was arrested and later bailed, but failed to show up the next morning at 10.30 a.m.

Six Heinekens cost man $800 fine

A Portuguese contract worker who caused a two vehicle traffic accident received a hefty fine for drunk driving on Thursday in Magistrates? Court.

Joao Almeida an employee of SAL pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle while impaired by drugs and alcohol.

Crown Counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court that on August 11 police were called to a double vehicle traffic accident on Somerset Road in Sandys.

?Whey they arrived they saw two officers holding the arm of the defendant who appeared to be intoxicated. When an officer spoke to him he noted that his breath smelled of alcohol.

When questioned, Almeida said, ?Yes, Sir I have had about six Heinekens. I am riding my bike home.?

Mr. Mahoney said it was apparent that Almeida didn?t speak much English.

?On one occasion he refused to go in the ambulance,? said Mr. Mahoney. ?Because he didn?t speak much English he was taken to Hamilton Police station. Through a translator he was arrested.?

Senior Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined the man $800 and disqualified him from driving for five months.
