The hero who proved hard to track down
The Bermuda Bravery Award Association had a challenge on its hands this year when one recipient of a Lifesaving Award could not be found.
In May this year Jerome Crockwell was at home in Somerset when he noticed smoke pouring from his neighbour's apartment.
Thanks to his quick actions, he pulled Mia Winters and her seven-month-old son Allan to safety through a bedroom window.
But when the Bermuda Bravery Award Association received details of Mr. Crockwell's good deed and decided to nominate him for a Lifesaving Award, they found themselves in a predicament. Mr. Crockwell did not want to be found.
Less than a week before yesterday's award ceremony at Government House, Committee chairman Mark Selley finally managed to track him down ? with a little help from the Bermuda Police Service.
Meanwhile Mr. Crockwell said he thought he was in trouble because suddenly everyone was looking for him, including the Police.
Being able to laugh about it yesterday, he said, he had no idea he would ever be nominated for this prestigious award because he just did what "anyone else would have done if they were in the same place at that particular moment in time".
Mr. Crockwell added that he simply thought he was in trouble again and went into hiding. It was only when Mr. Selley called his mother that he found out what it was all about.
With a smile as big as his heart, Mr. Crockwell yesterday said he was not planning on keeping the framed award, but was going to give it to his 12-year-old daughter.
