Your days as leader are numbered, Horton tells Gibbons

Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety boomed that Opposition leader had limited days in his position.

Mr. Horton began positively, congratulating new Police Commissioner George Jackson on his promotion, however, soon turned his anger against and called it malicious for placing a picture of an emotional Mr. Jackson on page one, when the Bermuda Police Service was Bermuda?s most disciplined unit.

But when Opposition leader Grant Gibbons said he saw nothing wrong with the photograph, Mr. Horton told him he was ?not going to be leader much longer!?

Community Affairs and Sport Minister said politicians should use their rhetoric to inspire and motivate ? not discourage people.

?Some of us spent a lot of time being bitter rather than becoming better,? he said. ?We need to start facing things better in 2006.?

Mr. Butler saw many jobs advertised in the paper, but young people did not have the necessary experience to qualify.

?Our focus needs to be on the development of young people,? Mr. Butler said.

With the Island?s construction boom also came job opportunities in the cleaning industry and in human resources to put workers in the empty buildings, he said.

Shadow Minister of Women?s Affairs said with Christmas come an increase in alcohol consumption and abuse.

However, she encouraged women and children not to be afraid to seek help at the Physical Abuse and Women?s Resource Centre.

?Four hundred and twenty-nine children received abuse and neglect last year,? she said. ?This is a high number.?

National Drugs Control Minister said Bermuda had more money than ever before, however, people who could not afford homes were now buying cars, he said.

?All of us would like people to make the right choices but at the end of this year I feel very proud to be a citizen of this country.?

He said he saw Bermuda of 50 years ago in a recent visit to St. Kitts.

?They were happy with what they had,? he said. ?In this country we have more money than we know what to do with but are always complaining.?

Shadow Minister of Works and Engineering fired back at Mr. Horton?s earlier comments on the portrayal of new Police Commissioner George Jackson.

She told him there was nothing wrong with being sensitive.

?I appreciate emotion got the better of him,? she said. ?I was appreciative to know the Commissioner leading the Police was not a cold, harsh, superficial individual. Only macho men were brought up to believe that real men don?t cry.

?It takes a strong man to be able to acknowledge moments of emotion. I certainly give him 100 percent support,? she said. ?When I see a man who respects his wife, I see a man who can lead me anywhere.

?This was not a moment of weakness. It was a moment of strength.?

Minister Without Portfolio said the Opposition should stop painting a gloomy picture of Bermuda.

?Many people live a good quality of life,? Mr. Lister said. ?Some don?t but we are sensitive to those who are not.?

Speaking on the hole in a Lefroy House roof, Mr. Lister said Health and Family Services Minister was doing the best she could under the circumstances.

Mr. Lister said the political cartoon by Peter Woolcock featuring Premier Alex Scott as Aladdin in Friday?s December 16 was ?rather offensive?. ?I think that cartoonist needs to take a second look at himself and respect the office of Premier,? Mr. Lister said.

Opposition leader said the last day of Parliament for a year was always a special session and wished everyone Merry Christmas.

concurred with Dr. Gibbons.

?The Westminster system sets one against the other at any issue,? he said. ?But on the last session a moment of goodwill flows around. And when I get into that flow I could even say Merry Christmas to Tony Brannon and send him an e-mail and really mean it this time.?
